First Drive: All-New 2009 Honda City Grade E with Modulo

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the grateful arrangement by USJ Car Express for the Test unit for us to cover the First Drive of the Honda City 2009 for edvinteo.com.

Honda City is one of the hot favourite passenger cars in the Asian Automobile market and is commonly popular and economical to run. As Honda City have the balance of styling, economical, and performance at its class. I'm glad that Honda launched this model which have impressed in many ways. Some even say that this Honda City looks like a Mini-Honda Accord but to me, of course is not...

This replacement model has a major change comparing to the previous model from exterior to the inner. Further, this Honda City no longer shares the same interior design as Honda Jazz as well. However, they both have the same 1.5 i-VTEC engine loaded. Honda also simplify things by offering same type of engine for both grade of City, hence there is no story of i-DSI or VTEC no more.

There also rumors from the internet, saying that the Honda City in China market will be getting the R18A engine. The R18A engine is similar to our Honda Civic 1.8 (FD1) in Malaysia. Guess that will be loads of fun with a 140ps 1.8 engine on a City, however it won't be surprise that the handling of the car will be awful due to the heavier engine on the front on a sub-compact car.

For our First Drive, the 2009 Honda City Grade E with Modulo Body kit is ready for edvinteo.com for exclusive review.

tn_DSC03493.JPG

The new City is larger than the previous model to 4395mm in length, 1715mm in width, and 1470mm in height. This makes the City the largest car in the 1.5 liter sub-compact car class. Since Honda is very clever on considering on storage and room space, the car still remain having Rear Foldable Seats with 60:40 split and Rear Reclining Seats, under seat tray (for placing umbrella?) in this Grade E model. Besides, this Honda City has a large trunk with 506 liter capacity.

tn_DSC03495.JPG

For this excitement city driving machine, the turning radius of this Honda City is still amazingly great as the previous one. It has the turning radius of 5.0m which is good for making U-turns and parking the car.

tn_DSC03496.JPG

As part of more space & comfort for small passenger car, the Honda City is designed with wide door angle which is easy for passenger to access into the car and transporting goods (maybe a PC computer?). However, remember not to open it too big and hit people's car at the car park, alright?

tn_DSC03513.JPG

Very sleek designed rear trunk and lamp comparing to the previous model as well as the current Toyota Vios which completely mess up. I believe, the Toyota market share for 1.5 liter sub-compact car will be affected by this introduction of Honda City.

tn_DSC03516.JPG

This 16 inches Honda Modulo wheels is optional and similar to the current Honda Jazz. Potential Honda City owner can decide on for this set of Modulo wheels at extra of approximately RM2.5k. Personally, I think this set of Honda Modulo wheels suits this car well comparing to other aftermarket wheels.

tn_city_modulo_wheels.jpg

The interior of the car doesn't have any fancy digital or stylish climate control (like Honda Jazz which looks like Microwave oven control/switches). But the steering wheel has leather trim with stitch on the Grade E, integrated Audio system and standard meter console. If you want something sporty, go for the Honda City Grade E as it comes with 'Paddle Shift' gearshift control on the steering wheel which you can find it at the higher range model of Honda (Civic 2.0 or Accord 2.4).

tn_DSC03498.JPG

According to Honda, the new engine on the Honda City and Jazz will be more powerful, advanced and more economical then ever before. It delivers 120ps at 6600rpm and 145Nm torque at 4800rpm. You will not find CVT transmission in this Honda City anymore. I bet the Honda's engineer does their home work with their lesson learned that the traditional automatic transmission is still a better option in terms of reliability rather than the 'rubber band' technology transmission (CVT).

tn_IMG_3774.JPG

The engine characteristic is very similar to the Honda Civic 1.8 (FD1) which is also Drive-by-Wire (DBW). Whenever this car at low-load condition (at average 2500rpm with light throttle), the car is rather quiet and smooth. This is part of the key achievement of this i-VTEC engine on Fuel Economy, Performance and Quiet Operation. Whenever you feel for something extra, you will find this engine roar sweetly until the maximum power of 120ps @ 6600rpm with little more torque than the previous City with L15A VTEC.

As part of our first drive session, we conducted the 0-100km/h test as well. This is due to most factory claim are not very accurate in real drive condition. We manage to get a reasonable 11.5 seconds in 2 run with 2 passengers on-board in this 1.5 SOHC i-VTEC engine with 5-speed Auto Transmission.

tn_DSC03503.JPG

There is a little space for placing coins or probably keys by the front passenger at the door panel.

tn_DSC03500.JPG

The glove box is rather small but it is good enough to place the booklet and other necessity stuff like notepad, pen and torch light.

tn_DSC03501.JPG

Triple Meter Cluster is nothing fancy for this car.

tn_DSC03502.JPG

Vehicle Information Display which helps drivers to increase awareness in fuel efficient and consumption. The display show useful data on current & average fuel efficiency and estimated travel distance before refueling which you can normally find at high-end vehicle like Toyota Harrier.

tn_DSC03509.JPG

When engine is idling, it will displays will indicate idle as well on the consumption.

tn_DSC03510.JPG

Integrated Head unit is a tread for most of the production cars. As it is part of security which preventing theft on the Head unit since it only fits into the same type of car. The audio system come standards with USB Port & AUX Terminal. Since USB and AUX are common interfaces, hence it allows connecting a wide range of devices such as iPod, MP3 players, Mobile HDDs and USB Flash Disk.

tn_DSC03512.JPG

As part of 6 channels speakers, the front tweeter is mounting on the side mirror cover which looks neat. Some people even say that this position for tweeter will have better sound effect too.

tn_DSC03511.JPG

Reasonable head room for regular sized Asian with average height of 170cm.

tn_DSC03505.JPG

Water Repellent Seats which is standard for VTEC model on the previous Honda City. However, we can get it as standard for both Grade S and Grade E model now.

tn_DSC03506.JPG

Honda Malaysia offers the car with 5 colours option - (1) Deep Lapis Blue Metallic (which you can find in my previous post), (2) Crystal Black Pearl (which you find in this current post), (3) Polished Metal Metallic, (4) Alabaster Silver Metallic (that is similar to Civic FD), and (5) Bold Beige Metallic.

In conclusion, this Honda City is much improve from the previous model from exterior, interior, engine and transmission. The introduction of this car does create competition and impact to other car manufacturer like Toyota. I believe, this car will be awarded for Car of the Year in Sub-compact Car Category for at least 2-continuous year. If you considering a reliable and affordable car for daily use with the budget of RM80k to RM90k, I will recommend this for sure at this point of time!

Here is the video of the BMW X5 M prototype tearing up a test track, and a BMW M GmbH executive attempt to convincing us how an X5 fits in the BMW M line-up.

Oh lord, won't you fly me a Mercedes-Benz at Malvern

Even if you tried this stunt, but I doubt that you could do what Pauline Grodski from Melbourne, Australia, did with her Mercedes-Benz C-Class at Elizabeth St, Malvern.

Park-Mercedes-Benz.jpg

The neighbours suggested it was an award-winning stunt. "I think the driver deserves a medal to get a Mercedes on two wheels like that. I don't know how it happened," said Malvern resident Ed Waters to the Media Reporter.

Ms Grodski was apparently reaching for her lunchbox as she neared home and couldn't say how she'd suddenly turned half a cartwheel. This ended with her car hovering on two wheels astride a neighbor's parked Holden Astra sedan. Luckily, no one was injured in the incident and "things are going well".

COBRA N+ Nissan GT-R

The German tuning house - COBRA N+ has announced the development of a new performance package for the GT-R that will be available just in time for the Japanese sportscar's European market launch in the spring of 2009. COBRA N+ is readying two performance packages for the GT-R.

The first tuning stage is projected to deliver 550HP, with an increase in torque to 680 Nm. To achieve this, the twin-turbocharged engine electronics were reprogrammed, boost pressure was increased by 0.15 bar and the air intake was modified with sport air filters. Also under development is a free-flow COBRA N+ stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with metal catalysts. With First stage package, the GT-R will sprint to 100 km/h in less than 3.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of some 320 km/h.

The second tuning package which is still under development, will boost output to a hefty 620 HP and peak torque to approximately 800 Nm.

COBRA N+ will also offer an array of suspension, wheels and brake upgrades that promise to better the sportscar's handling. These include three-piece lightweight 21-inch alloy wheels, eight-piston brake calipers and 405-mm brake discs on the front axle as well as a coil-over suspension that features a multitude of selectable settings for ride height and damper rates.

The aerodymanic package for the GT-R includes a front apron with larger air dams, rocker panels, a rear apron with integrated diffuser, and a larger rear airfoil. For the adventurous types that don't mind being finger-pointed on the road, there's also a stripes decal kit.

For the interior COBRA N+ offers two different options, a luxury kit with specially sewn upholstery for seats and doors, made from a high-quality combination of leather and Alcantara, and a racing kit with ultra-light carbon-fiber racing seats, six-point seatbelts and roll cage.

First View: All-New 2009 Honda City in Malaysia

The all-new 2009 Honda City is officially launched on 18 December 2008 and will be available at showroom at all nationwide. As usual happened to all entry model cars by the most popular car manufacturers, Honda had fulfilled their order for January and February by the early bird City owner. If you plan to order now, you probably get it on the March 2009.

Without covering the review about the engine, drive train, and technology for this round. I will focus on the first sight and look on the entire car design and styling on the all-new City before moving to the detail of it. Therefore, I call this as First View of All-New 2009 Honda City in Malaysia.

On the next round, I will be cover the First Drive, technology & performance of this tiny City. I will expect this vehicle will be fun driving machine in the city. However, we will see on my upcoming First Drive on Honda City 2009.

First sight of the All-New City...

tn_DSCN8260.JPG

Futuristic Look, look similar to Euro Civic Styling.

tn_DSCN8258.JPG

Awesome designed Headlamp with huge front grill.

tn_DSCN8222.JPG

The rear of the car looks much better than the 'froggy' styled city on the previous model. Further, do you realise that the "C" Pillar is similar to FD Civic (but in smaller size....)?

tn_DSCN8226.JPG

Although the dashboard materials is plasticky and the dashboard are properly designed rather than the previous model.

tn_DSCN8231.JPG

The In-Car Audio system come with 4 speakers for Grade S (or 6 speakers for Grade E), USB ports & AUX Terminal. Of course, it supports MP3 and WMA formats.

tn_DSCN8238.JPG

Pretty standard design on the console meter on dash. Nothing impressive and outstand, two words - Sweet Simple

tn_DSCN8235.JPG

Well, the auto gear-stick is weird and the whole is simple. Reminds me the EG, EK Civic's.

tn_DSCN8239.JPG

Glove box compartment is smaller compare to the previous model. Trust me, sometimes you really don't need that much of space. Because too many "rubbish" keep in the glovebox, will causes a lot of rattling sound which you may think is due to the assembling issue during the car is assembled.

tn_DSCN8243.JPG

Usual City Style designed, 90 degree door angle for easy access by the passengers and ease on transporting goods. But please please be extra careful by not knocking people's car door at the Car Park when opening the door!

tn_DSCN8249.JPG

As usual, all new model will be upsizing their wheels by 1 inch. Hence, the Grade S is fitted with 15 inch wheels and Grade E is fitted with 16 inch wheels. Don't be confuse by the Grading, Grade E doesn't mean "Economy" like Toyota. Maybe it mean "Exclusive" in Honda's Thesaurus. For Grade S, it will be "Standard" and not "Sporty".

tn_DSCN8250.JPG
**This featured photo is a Grade S model.

From this angle view, the rear of the car looks similar to Euro-Continental car designed back in 90's. But it is something different for the Japanese this time.

tn_DSCN8256.JPG

The door handle is also similar to the current Euro Civic (FN-series).

tn_DSCN8257.JPG

The all-new 2009 Honda City go On-The-Road for RM84,980 on the Grade S and RM89,980 on the Grade E (inclusive of On Road Costs and Insurance). Standard come with 3 years warranty or 100,000km and 6 months free service or 10,000km.

Besides, Honda do also offers Modulo styling for the all-new City which including Front Under Spoiler, Side Under Spoiler, Rear Under Spoiler and Trunk Spoiler with extra of RM4,750.00. You may find the photo of Honda City with Modulo Bodykit here in my previous post.

The development of the NSX successor model equipped with V10 engine will be cancelled

tn_Acura-AVSC_3.jpg

The announcement was made today by Honda CEO Takeo Fukui at his end of year speech. "The development of the NSX successor model equipped with V10 engine will be cancelled," said Takeo Fukui.

The much anticipated NSX supercar that was previewed in concept form through the Acura Advance Sports Car Concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show was nearing its final stages of development. If it were to have been produced, the V10 supercar would have been the Japanese firm's most powerful production model ever according to company sources.

Aside from the cancellation of the NSX successor, the financial crisis that has hit the automobile industry has also forced Honda to withdraw from all Formula One activities, making 2008 the last season of participation for the Japanese company.

Though not as near as significant, Takeo Fukui revealed that Honda has also abandoned its prior plan to introduce the Acura brand in the Japanese market around 2010. On the bright side, Fukui confirmed once again that Honda's all-new sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z will go on sale by the end of 2010.

Subaru withdraw from FIA WRC after 2008 season

tn_impreza-jump.jpg

Fuji Heavy Industries has announced it is pulling its participation effective immediately. Fuji Heavy points to cost-cutting measures amidst the current global economic crisis as its reason for canceling its motorsport program. Still, it's a shocking move for the automaker that earned its reputation on the rally circuit, even if they haven't won a single stage since 2005. The move also means that Prodrive, the racing consultancy firm that has operated the Subaru WRC team for over 20 years, will need to find a new partner for next season and beyond as the WRC moves ahead with new regulations. But Prodrive may find the rally circuit a lonely place after Suzuki also canceled its participation, leaving Ford and Citroen as the only manufacturers fielding factory teams in the top level of rallying.

$14 Billion Auto bailout collapses in Senate

house-of-representatives.jpg

The future of the U.S. auto industry was in doubt Friday morning after a proposal for $14 billion in federal loans died in a late night Senate vote.

The Senate voted 52-35 to bring the measure for a vote - short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. The failure followed the collapse of negotiations between Senate Democrats and Republicans seeking a compromise that both parties, as well as the companies and the United Auto Workers union, could accept.

The dramatic late-night developments could doom General Motors to a bankruptcy and closure in the coming weeks, with Chrysler LLC potentially following close behind.

While Ford Motor has more cash on hand to avoid an immediate crisis, its production could be disrupted by problems in the supplier base, as could the production of overseas automakers with U.S. plants such as Toyota Motor and Honda Motor.

The engine upgrades have also led to slightly better fuel economy figures with Nissan announcing average fuel consumption in the Japanese driving cycle of 8.3 km/l instead of 8.2 km/l. In addition, the GT-R's fuel tank capacity increases from 71 litres to to 74 litres due to the fuel consumptions of this super car.

2009 Brisbane International Auto Show Cancelled

b_motorshow,0.jpg

The latest victim of the global economic downturn is Australia's 2009 Brisbane International Auto Show which has been cancelled after a series of automakers and distributors pulled out citing financial difficulties. Organizer Chris Beecham told the Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC) that the show was no longer financially viable. "Unfortunately the world economy has turned against us and we've had to pull the pin," said Beecham. "Every single car manufacturer has a head office overseas and they're all looking at ways to save money and unfortunately we don't control those budgets," he added.

Financial difficulties aside, another factor that seems to have played a significant role in the automakers decision is that the 2009 Brisbane International Auto Show (scheduled on February 6 to 15) coincided with the 2009 Melbourne International Auto Show that kicks off on the 27th February 2009.
